It is named after the völva, a prophetic seeress in Norse mythology, a figure associated with divination and knowledge of hidden events. As a numbered minor planet in the asteroid belt, Vala belongs to the population of small rocky bodies orbiting the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
