Alan Pred

Allan Pred (1936–2007) was an influential American geographer celebrated for his extensive research in urban, historical, and cultural geography. He spent his academic career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a central figure in the department.

Pred was instrumental in introducing and expanding upon Torsten Hägerstrand's time-geography to the English-speaking world. He utilized this framework to explain how places emerge through repeated human practices, institutional arrangements, and daily routines over time.

Beyond time-geography, Pred drew heavily on social theory to critique capitalism and analyze the cultural landscapes of cities. He frequently wrote about the power dynamics and structural inequalities that shape the modern urban experience.

Pred was a long-time professor at the University of California, Berkeley. During his tenure there, he mentored numerous PhD students and helped redefine the boundaries of cultural and urban geography in the late 20th century.
