help Alesis Vortex FAQ
Does the original Alesis Vortex make sounds by itself?
No, the original Vortex is a USB/MIDI keytar controller, so it needs a software instrument or external sound module to produce sound. Alesis bundled AIR Music Tech's Xpand!2 and Ableton Live Lite, but those are the sound and software sources, not an internal Vortex synth engine.
How many keys and pads does the Alesis Vortex have?
The original Vortex has 37 velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch and 8 velocity-sensitive drum pads or sample triggers. It is a compact performance controller, not a six-voice hardware keyboard, so the connected synth determines the available polyphony.
What do the Alesis Vortex ribbon controller and accelerometer do?
The neck includes a MIDI-assignable touch strip, while the accelerometer can send control data when you tilt the keytar. The same neck also has a thumb volume slider and pitch-bend wheel, which makes the Vortex suited to live movement.
Can the Alesis Vortex control hardware synths as well as Mac or PC software?
Yes, it has USB MIDI for Mac and PC plus a traditional 5-pin MIDI output for external synths or sound modules. Alesis also lists battery operation for use with MIDI hardware and iOS devices, while USB powers it when connected to a computer.
