description Apes Overview
Apes was an obsolete constellation introduced by Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius on a 1612 celestial globe to represent a bee. Its small group of stars lay in the area now assigned to Aries, and later maps used related names including Vespa, Lilium, and Musca Borealis. The figure was not retained among the 88 constellations recognized by modern astronomy, so Apes is now of historical interest.
