He gained national prominence as one of the Original Kings of Comedy, a touring comedy showcase also featuring Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer. From 2001 to 2006, he starred in the Fox television sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, which earned a Peabody Award.

He died on August 9, 2008, at age 50.
