The Box Nebula is the planetary nebula NGC 6309 in the constellation Ophiuchus. Wilhelm Tempel discovered it in 1876. It is an evolved-star remnant formed from gas expelled by a dying star and later illuminated by the exposed hot stellar core; its structure is described as quadrupolar, with two pairs of opposing lobes that contribute to its box-like appearance.
