The Cape Flats is a broad, low-lying sandy plain in South Africa’s Western Cape, east and southeast of Cape Town and between the Cape Peninsula and the mainland. It is a geographic link between the peninsula and the interior, with generally flat terrain formed from coastal sands. The area contains residential suburbs, townships, transport corridors, and industrial districts, and is an important part of Cape Town’s social and urban geography.
