description Chains Overview

Chains is a 2008 historical young adult novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. Set in New York during the American Revolution, it follows Isabel, a thirteen-year-old enslaved girl who is separated from her family and forced to serve a Loyalist household. Isabel must navigate the conflicting demands of enslavers, revolutionaries, and her own efforts to protect the people she loves. The novel presents the Revolutionary War through the perspective of an enslaved child and begins Anderson's Seeds of America trilogy.
