description Chalcedony Overview
Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline or microcrystalline form of silica composed mainly of intergrown quartz and moganite. It is commonly translucent, with a waxy luster, and occurs in many colors; banded material is usually called agate, while related varieties include carnelian, chrysoprase, and onyx. Because it is compact and takes a polish, chalcedony has been used for beads, seals, cameos, and engraved gems since antiquity.
