Christopher Clavius was a German Jesuit mathematician and astronomer who lived from 1538 to 1612. He taught and worked in Rome and contributed to mathematical and astronomical scholarship during the Renaissance. Clavius played a leading role in the commission and calculations behind the Gregorian calendar reform introduced in 1582, and his explanations helped spread the new calendar among European scholars and institutions.
