The Clutha River, known in Maori as Mata-Au, is a major river of the South Island of New Zealand and the country's largest by volume of discharge. It flows from Lake Wanaka through Central Otago and southeastward to the Pacific Ocean, receiving the Kawarau River along its course. The river supported intensive gold mining during the 1860s Otago gold rush and is now also used for hydroelectric generation, irrigation, recreation, and farming.
