description Common Dandelion Overview
Common dandelion usually refers to Taraxacum officinale, a perennial herb in the daisy family, Asteraceae. Native to Eurasia, it is now naturalized across much of the world and commonly grows in lawns, meadows, roadsides, and other disturbed ground. Each flower head contains many small yellow florets and later becomes a rounded seed head of parachute-like fruits that are dispersed by wind. Young leaves, roots, and flowers are edible and are used in some foods and drinks, although plants from treated or polluted sites should not be collected.
