description Composband Overview
Composband is a traditional roguelike derived from the Angband family of games and assembled from systems found in PosChengband, Kangband, and other variants. It uses turn-based, tile-by-tile dungeon exploration, permanent character death, procedural generation, and a large collection of races, classes, monsters, and items. The project is also historically significant within Angband variant development because it became the code base from which FrogComposband was created.
help Composband FAQ
How is Composband related to PosChengband?
Composband forked from PosChengband and combined that codebase with ideas drawn from several other Angband variants. It expanded the formula with additional towns, quests, dungeons, races, classes, monsters and items.
Can you play as monsters in Composband?
Yes, its PosChengband inheritance includes playable monster races with unusual equipment slots, powers and development paths. This produces character builds far beyond the conventional warrior, mage and rogue combinations of base Angband.
What did FrogComposband inherit from Composband?
FrogComposband began as a descendant of Composband and retained much of its overworld, character variety and quest-heavy design. It subsequently added more towns, races, classes, quests, artifacts and balance changes of its own.
Is Composband a beginner-friendly version of Angband?
Its interface remains turn-based and keyboard-oriented like Angband, but the huge number of races, classes and systems makes character creation more complex. Features such as instant pseudo-identification and visible skill values can reduce some uncertainty once play begins.
