Copán

description Copán Overview

Copán is an ancient Maya city in western Honduras near the border with Guatemala, and it was the center of an important Classic-period kingdom. The site is noted for portrait stelae, carved altars, temples, ball courts, and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, whose numerous inscribed blocks preserve an extensive dynastic text. Copán's sculpture and inscriptions provide detailed evidence about Maya rulers, ritual life, warfare, and political history, and the site is listed by UNESCO.

help Copán FAQ

What does Copán's Hieroglyphic Stairway record?

Its inscription recounts the history and dynastic succession of Copán's Maya rulers. More than 1,800 glyphs survive on the stairway, making it the longest known Maya inscription.

Who founded Copán's ruling dynasty?

The ruler K'inich Yax K'uk' Mo' arrived in the Copán Valley in 427 and established a dynasty of 16 rulers. Copán then became a major Classic Maya political and artistic center.

Why are Copán's stelae different from those at many other Maya sites?

Copán's sculptors produced unusually deep, rounded relief that makes rulers appear almost three-dimensional. The Great Plaza contains some of the site's finest portrait stelae and carved altars.

Can visitors walk directly on the Hieroglyphic Stairway?

No. Access to the original steps is restricted because weather and earlier exposure caused serious deterioration, and a protective covering shelters the monument.
