The sport was invented in 1891 by Irish cyclist Richard J. Mecredy in County Wicklow, Ireland, originally played on grass fields following adapted polo rules. A hardcourt variant later developed, played on asphalt or concrete surfaces with teams of typically three players each, and gained international popularity with regular world championships organized since the 1990s.
Both grass and hardcourt cycle polo are played by clubs worldwide, requiring bicycle handling skills, teamwork, and ball control.
