description De Beers Overview

Founded in 1888 by Cecil Rhodes in Kimberley, South Africa, De Beers Consolidated Mines became one of the most influential companies in the global diamond industry. For much of the twentieth century it maintained control over diamond production and distribution through its Central Selling Organisation, regulating supply to stabilize prices. The company originated the advertising slogan 'A Diamond is Forever' in 1947, which helped establish diamond engagement rings as a widespread cultural practice. Headquartered in London, De Beers operates mining operations in southern Africa and Canada.

help De Beers FAQ

Did De Beers really control most of the world's diamond supply?

For much of the twentieth century, De Beers exercised enormous influence through mining interests and its Central Selling Organisation. Its dominance later declined as producers in countries such as Russia, Canada, and Australia developed supply outside that system.

Did De Beers create the idea of the diamond engagement ring?

Diamond engagement rings existed before De Beers, but the company greatly expanded their cultural importance through advertising. N. W. Ayer introduced the famous slogan "A Diamond Is Forever" for De Beers in 1948.

What is the difference between De Beers Group and De Beers Jewellers?

De Beers Group encompasses diamond exploration, mining, sorting, and related businesses. De Beers Jewellers is the consumer-facing luxury brand selling engagement rings, high jewelry, and other finished pieces.

Does De Beers sell lab-grown diamonds?

De Beers launched Lightbox Jewelry in 2018 to sell laboratory-grown diamond jewelry separately from its natural-diamond luxury business. The move distinguished fashion-oriented lab-grown products from De Beers Jewellers' natural-diamond positioning.
