Debre Damo Monastery

description Debre Damo Monastery Overview

Debre Damo is a historic monastery of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in northern Ethiopia. It stands on a flat-topped amba, or isolated mountain plateau, and is reached by climbing a steep rock face with the aid of a rope. The monastery is traditionally associated with the sixth-century missionary Abba Aregawi and is reserved for male monks and visitors. Its religious importance, remote setting, and early Ethiopian architecture make it a significant subject in Ethiopian Christian history.
