Derevo

Derevo is a physical theatre ensemble founded by Anton Adasinsky in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1988. The group combines elements of mime, clowning, butoh, dance, and improvisation into a distinctive performance style. Adasinsky had previously been a member of the Litsedei clown theatre before forming Derevo.

Derevo relocated to Dresden, Germany, where the company has been based for many years. The move allowed the group to reach broader European audiences and establish itself in the international physical theatre scene. Despite the relocation, the company retains its Russian artistic roots and continues to tour globally.

Before creating Derevo, Anton Adasinsky was a member of Litsedei, a pioneering Russian clown theatre company based in St. Petersburg. His experience in clowning, combined with influences from butoh and physical theatre traditions, shaped the unique artistic vocabulary that defines Derevo's work. He is known for creating performances that blend dark humor with visceral physicality.

Derevo is known for acclaimed productions such as 'Once,' 'The Red Harlequin's Dream,' and 'The Heart of a Dog,' among others. These works typically feature minimal dialogue and rely on Adasinsky's intense physical storytelling. The company has built a devoted international following through performances at major theatre festivals across Europe.
