The DRG Class 01 was Germany's first standardized steam locomotive, introduced by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in 1926. These 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives were designed for express passenger service, capable of reaching speeds up to 120 km/h. With a total of 231 units built, they served as the primary long-distance passenger locomotives throughout the steam era in Germany. The Class 01 locomotives were known for their distinctive streamlined smoke deflectors and were used on prestigious express trains until they were gradually replaced by diesel and electric locomotives in the 1960s and 1970s.

Why was the DRG Class 01 given a 4-6-2 Pacific wheel arrangement?
