Dubhe

description Dubhe Overview

Dubhe, designated Alpha Ursae Majoris, is a binary star system located approximately 124 light-years from the Sun in the constellation Ursa Major. The primary component is an orange giant of spectral type K0III, while the companion is a main-sequence star of similar type in a wide orbit. Dubhe is one of the seven stars that form the Big Dipper asterism and, together with Merak (Beta Ursae Majoris), functions as one of the two pointer stars used to locate Polaris by tracing a line through both stars toward the north celestial pole. The system also has a more distant companion star, making it a triple system.

help Dubhe FAQ

How do Dubhe and Merak point to Polaris?

Dubhe (Alpha Ursae Majoris) and Merak (Beta Ursae Majoris) form the two "pointer stars" at the outer edge of the Big Dipper's bowl. By drawing a line from Merak through Dubhe and extending it roughly five times the distance between the two stars, observers reach Polaris, the North Star.

What type of star is Dubhe?

Dubhe is an orange giant star of spectral type K0III, located approximately 124 light-years from Earth. Its cooler surface temperature compared to the Sun gives it a distinctive amber-orange hue visible to the naked eye.

Is Dubhe a binary star system?

Yes, Dubhe is part of a multiple star system consisting of at least four stellar components. The primary star Alpha Ursae Majoris A is paired with a cooler main-sequence companion designated Alpha Ursae Majoris B, and a more distant binary pair (Alpha Ursae Majoris C and D) orbits the inner pair.

Is Dubhe actually the brightest star in Ursa Major?

Despite its Bayer designation as Alpha Ursae Majoris, Dubhe is actually slightly fainter than Alioth (Epsilon Ursae Majoris) by a small margin. The Alpha designation was assigned by Bayer based on positional priority in the asterism rather than strict brightness ordering.
