Edward Phillips was an English writer and lexicographer active in the seventeenth century. His best-known reference work, The New World of English Words, appeared in 1658 as a large English dictionary covering vocabulary from areas such as the arts, sciences, geography, and general learning. The book drew on earlier lexicographical work, including Thomas Blount's Glossographia, and is studied as an important example of early modern English reference publishing.
