description Edward White Overview
Edward White, formally Edward Douglass White, was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States before becoming Chief Justice in 1910. He was originally appointed to the Court by President Grover Cleveland and became the first associate justice to be elevated to chief justice. He led the Court until his death in 1921, making his career part of the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
