Fang

The π Scorpii system lies roughly 590 light-years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius. Its distance has been refined through measurements from the Hipparcos mission era.

The name comes from the Chinese lunar mansion Fang (房, 'the Room'), one of the traditional Chinese sky divisions near the heart of the Azure Dragon constellation. π Scorpii belongs to this asterism, so the mansion's name was applied to the star.

π Scorpii is a triple system dominated by hot, blue-white B-type stars in a close binary plus a more distant third component. The system is considered part of the Scorpius-Centaurus association, the nearest massive stellar grouping to the Sun.

Yes. With a combined apparent magnitude of about 2.9, π Scorpii is easily visible without optics under a dark sky. Look for it near Graffias (β Scorpii) in the northern part of Scorpius, in the cluster of stars forming the scorpion's head.
