Frank Murphy was an American lawyer, public official, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him to the Court, where he served from 1940 until his death in 1949. Before joining the Court, Murphy served as Governor of Michigan and as U.S.

Attorney General. His judicial record is associated with strong protection of civil liberties, making him relevant to the study of the New Deal era and twentieth-century constitutional law.
