Freckled Duck

description Freckled Duck Overview

The Freckled Duck, Stictonetta naevosa, is a medium-sized Australian waterfowl species with a heavy body and dark gray-brown plumage marked by pale freckling. Its head is peaked toward the rear and its narrow bill turns slightly upward; in breeding males, the bill base becomes crimson. The species occurs mainly in southeastern and southwestern Australia, with vagrants elsewhere, and uses permanent swamps or freshly flooded creeks containing cumbungi and tangled lignum for breeding. It is a subject of state threatened-species monitoring and wetland management.
