Freney Pillar

The Freney Pillar is a steep, central granite ridge located on the southern side of Mont Blanc. It sits specifically on the Italian side of the Alps, entirely within the Aosta Valley region.

The pillar is notoriously famous among alpinists for its incredibly challenging, dangerous, and loose rock climbs. It is considered one of the most demanding and committing routes in the entire Mont Blanc massif.

In 1961, a devastating storm trapped seven elite climbers on the pillar, leading to a highly publicized mountain rescue attempt. Four of the climbers ultimately perished, cementing the pillar's dark reputation in alpine history.

Unlike the standard snow and ice routes often associated with Mont Blanc, the Freney Pillar is primarily composed of steep, highly compacted granite. This poor-quality, fractured granite makes placing traditional climbing protection extremely difficult and dangerous.
