Gahnite

description Gahnite Overview

Gahnite is the zinc-rich spinel-group mineral with the ideal formula ZnAl2O4. It was described from the Falun mine in Sweden in 1807, and its name honors Swedish chemist and mineralogist Johan Gottlieb Gahn. It commonly forms dark green, bluish green, blue, or nearly black crystals and granular masses in granite pegmatites, metamorphic rocks, and metamorphosed sulfide deposits; specimens are chiefly collected for mineral study, while transparent material can be cut as a gemstone.
