Gamma World is a pioneering science-fantasy tabletop role-playing game set on a post-apocalyptic Earth devastated by nuclear catastrophe. First published by TSR in 1978, it explores a far-future world where genetic mutations and advanced technology coexist. Players take on the roles of mutants, sentient animals, and pure-strain humans trying to survive.

Gamma World was originally created by James M. Ward and Gary Jaquet, and published by TSR in 1978. The game was heavily inspired by Ward's previous post-apocalyptic RPG called "Metamorphosis Alpha." The design drew inspiration from contemporary sci-fi novels featuring mutant wastelands.

Over its many editions, Gamma World has used several different rule sets, but the original 1978 version relied on its own unique percentile-based mechanics similar to TSR's "Top Secret" RPG. Later editions experimented with the Alternity system, the d20 Modern system (in 2003), and a card-based mechanic for the 2010 edition.
