Gerald Ford was an American lawyer and Republican politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from August 9, 1974, to January 20, 1977. He became president after Richard Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal, having first succeeded Spiro Agnew as vice president through the process established by the Twenty-fifth Amendment. Before entering the executive branch, Ford represented Michigan in the House of Representatives for nearly 25 years and served as House minority leader. He remains the only U.S.

president who was never elected president or vice president.
