description Gravensteen Overview
The Gravensteen is a medieval castle in the center of Ghent, Belgium, built for Count Philip of Alsace in the late twelfth century. Its stone keep, defensive walls, towers, gatehouse, and moat expressed the authority of the Counts of Flanders and incorporated features associated with fortifications Philip had encountered abroad. After later serving judicial, industrial, and residential uses, the restored castle became a museum open to visitors.
