Indus Delta

The Indus Delta is located in southern Pakistan in Sindh province, where the Indus River meets the Arabian Sea. It spans a vast area of tidal creeks, mudflats, and mangrove forests. It is one of the largest deltas in the arid zone globally.

The Indus Delta is recognized as one of the most ecologically diverse arid-zone deltas in the world. It supports extensive mangrove forests that rank among the largest of any arid-climate delta. The delta provides critical habitat for the endangered Indus River dolphin and serves as a stopover for migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway.

The Indus Delta has experienced severe ecological degradation due to reduced freshwater flows caused by upstream dams and irrigation diversions. Seawater intrusion has damaged agricultural lands and mangrove ecosystems in the lower delta. Fishing communities dependent on the delta have seen declining livelihoods as fish stocks have diminished.

The Indus Delta hosts significant biodiversity, including the endangered Indus River dolphin (Platanista gangetica minor), which is endemic to the Indus River system. Its mangrove forests serve as fish nurseries and shelter crustaceans, mudskippers, and waterbirds. Flamingos and other migratory species also rely on the delta's mudflats during seasonal migrations.
