Iris Agate

description Iris Agate Overview

Iris agate is a finely banded variety of agate, a form of chalcedony, whose microscopic layers can produce a rainbow effect through diffraction. The effect depends on sufficiently thin, closely spaced bands and is usually visible when a properly cut section is illuminated from behind, allowing light to pass through the translucent material. In ordinary reflected light the stone may resemble other banded agates, so iris agate is primarily distinguished by its transmitted-light optical display.
