James Blaut

James Blaut's best-known work is 'The Colonizer's Model of the World: Geographical Diffusionism and Eurocentric History,' published in 1993. In it, he systematically critiques the widespread assumption that European societies developed independently and then diffused progress to the rest of the world.

Blaut argues that Eurocentric explanations of global inequality falsely treat European societies as independent sources of innovation and progress. He contends that Europe's rise was not due to internal cultural superiority but rather to colonial exploitation and the extraction of resources from other regions.

Blaut's research spanned colonialism, cultural geography, and the historical development of global inequality. He was particularly interested in how geographic theories and models have been used to justify or obscure unequal power relationships between Europe and the Global South.

Blaut criticized diffusionist models that portray Europe as a permanent geographical center from which ideas, technology, and civilization spread outward. He argued that these models erase the contributions of non-European societies and mask the role of colonialism in producing modern global disparities.
