description James Hulbert Overview

James R. Hulbert was an English scholar and University of Chicago professor who worked in historical lexicography. He collaborated with Sir William A. Craigie on A Dictionary of American English on Historical Principles, a major scholarly dictionary of American words and usages.

The first volume appeared in 1936, and Hulbert's editorial role continued through the multi-volume project published by the University of Chicago Press.
