Jet is a black gemstone consisting of lignite, a geological precursor of coal formed from fossilized wood, with the finest historic material coming from Jurassic deposits around Whitby in Yorkshire, England. It takes a high polish with a deep, velvety luster, feels warm to the touch, and acquires a static electric charge when rubbed. Carved into ornaments since prehistory, jet became emblematic of Victorian mourning jewelry after Queen Victoria wore Whitby jet following the death of Prince Albert in 1861.
