Jingu Guyot

description Jingu Guyot Overview

Jingu Guyot is a flat-topped underwater volcano (guyot) located in the Pacific Ocean as part of the Emperor Seamount chain. It formed approximately 55 million years ago during the Paleocene to Eocene epochs, making it one of the older seamounts in the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain that stretches across the northern Pacific Ocean. The guyot has a distinctive twin-peaked structure that suggests it was formed by two separate volcanic centers that eventually coalesced. Like other guyots in the chain, Jingu was once an above-water volcanic island that gradually subsided as it moved away from the hotspot and the oceanic crust cooled and sank.
