John Ashcroft is an American lawyer and Republican politician who served as the 79th United States attorney general from 2001 to 2005 under President George W. Bush. He previously served as governor of Missouri and represented Missouri in the United States Senate. As attorney general, he directed federal law-enforcement policy during the period after the September 11 attacks, including implementation of the USA PATRIOT Act.
