description Kyoto Protocol Overview

The Kyoto Protocol is an international environmental treaty adopted in 1997 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It established legally binding greenhouse gas reduction targets for many industrialized countries and economies in transition, while assigning no comparable binding targets to developing countries in its first commitment period. The protocol entered into force in 2005 and became a central early framework for international climate policy.
