Leukerbad is a thermal spa municipality in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, situated at approximately 1,400 m elevation in the Alps. Its thermal springs have been used since Roman times and supply water to extensive thermal bath complexes that make up the largest such facility in the Alps. The village is accessible via a road that climbs through a dramatic gorge and by cable car to the nearby Gemmi Pass, a historic alpine crossing. Mark Twain visited Leukerbad in the 1870s and described his experience in the travel book A Tramp Abroad (1880).
