Lloyd Conover

description Lloyd Conover Overview

Lloyd Conover was an American chemist who, while working at Pfizer in the early 1950s, synthesized tetracycline by chemically modifying chlortetracycline, an antibiotic discovered by Benjamin Duggar. This breakthrough, patented in 1955, created the first entirely synthetic antibiotic in commercial production. Tetracycline's broad-spectrum efficacy against numerous bacterial infections made it one of the most significant antibiotics of the 20th century, earning Conover recognition from the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
