Logical Progression

description Logical Progression Overview

Logical Progression is a sport climbing route in Japan, graded 9a on the French difficulty scale, equivalent to 5.14d in the Yosemite Decimal System. Routes at this grade represent an elite level of difficulty achievable by only a small number of climbers worldwide. The route has been recognized as a significant testpiece within the Asian sport climbing community. It is attempted primarily by climbers who specialize in high-end sport climbing and have years of dedicated training at the upper difficulty grades.

help Logical Progression FAQ

Where is the climbing route Logical Progression?

Logical Progression climbs El Gigante in Mexico's Basaseachi region of Chihuahua. It is a huge multi-pitch line rather than a conventional single-pitch sport route.

How long is Logical Progression?

The original route was described as 28 pitches and was promoted as one of the world's longest sport climbs. Its scale requires big-wall planning even though fixed bolts provide much of the protection.

Who established Logical Progression?

Bert DeCapio and Jared Ogden established and freed the route around the beginning of the 2000s. Their work involved cleaning loose and vegetated rock and equipping hundreds of bolt placements on El Gigante.

Why has Logical Progression been controversial among climbers?

Critics objected to the extensive top-down cleaning and roughly 400 bolts used to create a sport-climbing experience on a major wilderness wall. Supporters emphasized the sustained free climbing and unusual accessibility of a 28-pitch bolted route.
