Masterpiece

Masterpiece has been broadcast on PBS since 1971, making it the longest-running primetime drama series in American television history. The anthology series has presented British dramatic productions to American audiences for over five decades. It debuted on January 4, 1971, originally under the title Masterpiece Theatre.

The original host was British-American journalist Alistair Cooke, who introduced episodes from 1971 until 1992. Cooke's warm, erudite introductions became a signature element of the series and helped establish its reputation for quality British drama. After Cooke's departure, the series went through several subsequent hosts and format changes.

Masterpiece has been the American home for iconic British dramas including Upstairs, Downstairs, Prime Suspect, Downton Abbey, and Sherlock. Downton Abbey in particular became a massive ratings hit for PBS in the 2010s, drawing millions of weekly viewers. The series has also aired acclaimed literary adaptations of works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Agatha Christie.

Over the years, Masterpiece has used several branded strands including Masterpiece Classic, Masterpiece Mystery!, and Masterpiece Contemporary to categorize its programming. These strands were introduced to help audiences distinguish between period dramas, detective series, and modern productions. The series is currently branded simply as Masterpiece and is produced by GBH Boston.
