description Patjuk Overview
Patjuk is a Korean juk, or porridge, made primarily from red beans and rice. It is especially associated with Dongji, the winter solstice, when the dish has traditionally been eaten during the season’s longest night. The red color of the beans was believed to repel harmful spirits, and some versions include glutinous rice balls. Patjuk can be prepared as a savory porridge or as a sweetened dessert called danpatjuk.
