description Pecan Weevil Overview
The pecan weevil, Curculio caryae, is a North American weevil in the family Curculionidae and an obligate nut feeder associated with pecans and hickories. Adults emerge from soil and enter tree canopies, where females puncture developing nuts and lay eggs. Larvae feed inside the shell and kernel, causing damaged nuts to drop and reducing the edible crop. The species occurs east of the Rocky Mountains, especially in the southern United States, and is a major pecan pest.
