Percy Grainger

Percy Grainger is best remembered for his piano piece Country Gardens, which he published in 1918. The composition exemplifies his innovative approach to transforming traditional British folk music into classical works. The upbeat, folk-inspired melody became a massive international success.

Grainger was an Australian-born composer and pianist, born in Melbourne in 1882. He later moved to Europe and eventually settled in the United States, but his Australian roots remained a strong part of his identity. He spent much of his career studying and recording indigenous and folk music.

Grainger was a pioneer in using the phonograph to record traditional folk singers directly in the field, rather than transcribing them by ear. He meticulously collected hundreds of British folk songs to preserve their original nuances and vocal quirks. He believed these raw recordings were crucial to keeping traditional music alive.

While he was a virtuoso pianist who wrote heavily for the piano, Grainger also composed extensively for concert bands. He was actually one of the first prominent classical composers to treat the wind band as a serious artistic medium. His band works remain staples of the concert band repertoire today.
