Peter was a young male bottlenose dolphin involved in John C. Lilly's dolphin communication research in the United States Virgin Islands during the 1960s. Researcher Margaret Howe Lovatt lived and worked closely with him in a partially flooded experimental space, repeatedly encouraging him to imitate simple human speech sounds. The project examined whether a dolphin could reproduce spoken patterns, but it did not demonstrate humanlike language acquisition and later became controversial for its methods and interpretation.
