description Phobos 2 Overview

Phobos 2 was a Soviet spacecraft launched in 1988 as part of a mission to study Mars and its moon Phobos. It entered orbit around Mars in 1989 and returned observations of the planet before contact with the spacecraft was lost shortly before its planned encounter with Phobos. The mission was intended to combine Mars-orbiting measurements with close study of the Martian moon.
