description Pig's Ear Overview
Gomphus clavatus, called pig's ear or violet chanterelle, is an edible fungus found in parts of Eurasia and North America. Its fruit body begins as a club or peg and develops into several fused, vase- or fan-shaped lobes, with lilac to violet tones that often fade toward tan. The underside bears wrinkled, forked ridges rather than true gills or pores, a key feature separating it from many superficially similar mushrooms. It forms mycorrhizal associations with trees and is often found in coniferous woodland.
