description Playback Overview

Playback is the ninth and final completed novel featuring Raymond Chandler’s private detective Philip Marlowe. First published in 1958, it follows Marlowe after he is hired to locate a woman who is being pursued by private investigators and other interested parties. The novel is set mainly in California and retains Chandler’s hardboiled style, combining detective work, guarded dialogue and social observation. It was developed from an earlier screenplay that had not been produced.
