Poor Folk (Bednye lyudi) is the debut novel of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, published in 1846. Written as an exchange of letters between Makar Devushkin, an impoverished government clerk, and Varvara Dobroselova, a young woman living in strained circumstances, the novel depicts their daily struggles with poverty, illness, and social marginalization in St. Petersburg. The epistolary form allows Dostoevsky to render the characters' inner lives with psychological depth.
The work was praised by the influential critic Vissarion Belinsky, who recognized Dostoevsky as a significant new voice in Russian literature.
